Night City is about to ruin another group of people’s lives. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20, 2026 , bringing CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER back together for another ten episode descent into the world of Cyberpunk 2077. It is not a continuation of David Martinez’s story, and that is probably the most important thing to understand before going in. The original Edgerunners ended with the kind of finality that made it hit so hard. Rather than undoing that ending, the new season is treating Night City itself as the connective tissue. That means a completely new cast, a new conflict, and another group of people trying to survive a city that tends to turn ambition into ammunition. The first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became one of the defining anime releases of 2022 because it did more than advertise a video game. It took the setting of Cyberpunk 2077 and built a compact, emotional tragedy that stood on its own. Four years later, Edgerunners 2 has the difficult job of returning to that world without simply trying to manufacture another David and Lucy. So far, the new series looks like it understands the assignment. This Is a New Story, Not David’s Second Act CD PROJEKT RED has been very clear about the premise: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a standalone story . David’s story is over. The new series keeps Night City, the corporations, the chrome, the gangs, and the suffocating machinery of the Cyberpunk universe, but it shifts the spotlight to people we have not met before. That choice immediately gives the anime room to breathe. Trying to directly continue the original would have created an impossible problem. Edgerunners worked because its ending mattered. Reversing deaths, forcing old characters back into the center of the plot, or inventing a convenient reason for the same crew to return would risk weakening the very thing fans loved. Instead, Edgerunners 2 appears to be turning the series into something closer to an anthology. Night City becomes the constant. The people inside it change. The official description centers on family, obsession, legacy, revenge, and the stories people tell about one another . That last idea looks especially important this time. The original series was obsessed with dreams: David inheriting his mother’s dream, Maine’s dream, Lucy’s dream, and eventually losing track of which desires were actually his own. Edgerunners 2 seems interested in something adjacent but different: what happens when people become legends, memories, images, or stories after the person underneath has already been destroyed. Meet Weak, a Legend Who Has Already Fallen One of the new central characters is Weak , a veteran edgerunner who was once known as “King.” He used to sit near the top of Night City’s food chain, but the version of him we meet is living in the shadow of that reputation. Even more interestingly, Weak is now forced to live without chrome . That is a fascinating setup in this universe. Cyberpunk stories constantly ask how much of yourself you can replace before you stop being yourself, but Weak creates the opposite question. What happens when someone whose identity was built around power, implants, reputation, and violence suddenly has those things stripped away? For a former legend, surviving without chrome may be more humiliating than dying with it. Weak is voiced in Japanese by Kentaro Tone , and his position as an older, washed up cyberpunk already separates him from David. David began with almost nothing and kept adding more until his body could no longer carry the weight. Weak appears to begin after the fall, staring backward at a version of himself that no longer exists. That makes him one of the most promising ideas in the new anime. Edgerunners 2 does not need another teenager sprinting toward self destruction in exactly the same way. A character dealing with the aftermath of a life already spent chasing Night City’s idea of greatness could give the series a completely different emotional center. D Is Bringing Revenge Into the Equation The other major figure revealed so far is simply named D , a Snake Nation netrunner voiced by Koki Uchiyama . D is hunting the person responsible for wiping out his clan, and that pursuit apparently drags him toward corporate secrets that were never meant to surface. It is the kind of plot hook that fits Cyberpunk perfectly: a personal vendetta that begins at street level and gradually leads into systems of power far larger than the person seeking revenge. The danger is not just that D might fail. In Night City, success can be even worse. The best Cyberpunk stories tend to blur the line between using the system and being used by it. A talented netrunner chasing a killer through buried corporate information is exactly the sort of person who can convince himself that he is in control right up until the moment the walls close in. D also gives the new season an opportunity to explore a different corner of the setting. The Snake Nation connection brings nomad culture into the story, while his role as a netrunner naturally opens the door to cyberspace, corporate espionage, and the invisible wars happening behind Night City’s billboards. The New Cast Looks Bigger Than a Two Person Tragedy Weak and D may be the easiest characters to summarize, but they are not alone. The official character lineup also includes Roman Carax , a young cinephile obsessed with recording real stories in a world that has largely moved on from film to braindance. Roman’s fascination with truth could end up being one of the season’s most important ideas. He is not simply trying to survive Night City; he wants to capture it. There is also Talia , a woman raised around corporate privilege before being hardened by Maelstrom’s chrome obsessed culture. Her mother, Avida , is a former jazz singer and corporate insider who also happens to be Weak’s old flame. Avida is now married to Kang Tao executive Kiril , tying the personal drama directly into one of the setting’s major corporations. That web of relationships suggests a story with more moving pieces than the original season initially had. Edgerunners 2 also includes Sal, the owner of a braindance business; Jessie, a braindance engineer; an Arasaka corpo named Kitano; and another Kang Tao figure named Richard. Even before the first episode airs, you can see the shape of the conflict forming around corporate power, recorded experience, reputation, family, and people attempting to control how a story is remembered. That is an intriguing direction because it gives the sequel a thematic identity instead of simply changing the names on the guns. Night City Is Still the Main Character The smartest thing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners ever did was understand that Night City does not care who the protagonist is. David feels special because we spend ten episodes inside his life. The city does not feel the same way. It existed before him, consumed him, and kept glowing afterward. Edgerunners 2 appears ready to lean directly into that cruelty. A new cast means viewers have to accept that David’s crew was not the only group living through something extraordinary. Somewhere else in the city, another mercenary was becoming famous. Another family was falling apart. Another netrunner was digging into the wrong database. Another person was deciding that one more implant, one more job, or one more act of revenge would finally make everything worth it. That is why an anthology style future could be perfect for Edgerunners. Night City can produce almost unlimited stories while still maintaining a recognizable identity. The series does not need to endlessly escalate David’s specific plot. It only needs to keep finding people with something to lose. Studio TRIGGER Is Back, but the Visuals Are Evolving Studio TRIGGER returning is a massive reason to be excited. The original Edgerunners had an explosive visual identity: impossible color, violent motion, exaggerated expressions, sudden brutality, and moments of quiet beauty that made the chaos hit harder. Edgerunners 2 is again being created through the collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED and TRIGGER , but there has been a change behind the camera. Kai Ikarashi is directing the new series, taking over from original director Hiroyuki Imaishi. Ikarashi worked on the first Edgerunners and has credits connected to projects such as SSSS.Gridman, so this is not a random outsider being handed the keys to Night City. Kanno Ichigo serves as lead character designer, while returning story figure Bartosz Sztybor is showrunner, story writer, and producer. Masahiko Otsuka is also back for the screenplay adaptation. Netflix has described the new installment as featuring a reimagined animation style, while the released footage still unmistakably carries TRIGGER’s energy. That balance will be important. The sequel should look like Edgerunners without feeling trapped inside the visual decisions of 2022. A new cast deserves its own silhouettes, colors, editing rhythms, and signature moments. The teaser footage already suggests that the production is not interested in becoming restrained. Good. Cyberpunk should feel dangerous even when nobody is firing a weapon. The Biggest Challenge Is Following an Anime People Loved Too Much Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has one unavoidable problem: the first season became emotionally sacred to a lot of viewers. That sounds dramatic, but anyone who watched the reaction to the original knows what happened. David and Lucy were not merely popular characters. Their story became fused with the identity of the anime itself. The soundtrack became emotional shorthand. Certain locations in Cyberpunk 2077 suddenly carried a completely different meaning. Players went back into the game to visit places connected to the crew. A second season cannot recreate that response by copying the formula. It would be very easy to produce another doomed romance, another escalating chrome addiction, another charismatic crew, another sequence designed to make a specific song emotionally devastating, and then wait for the audience to cry again. That would probably work in the short term. It would also be the least interesting version of Edgerunners 2. The more promising path is the one the official material currently points toward: different kinds of broken people, different ages and backgrounds, a heavier focus on legacy and perception, and a story where the question is not whether someone can become a legend but what a legend actually becomes once other people start controlling the story. October 20 Could Be One of Fall 2026’s Biggest Anime Dates There is no shortage of anime competing for attention in Fall 2026, but Edgerunners 2 arrives with something very few new seasons possess: enormous expectations from anime fans and Cyberpunk fans at the same time. It also has an unusually clean pitch. You do not need to remember complicated lore from the first season. You do not need to replay Cyberpunk 2077. You do not need to know every corporation, gang, or piece of tabletop history. The new season is designed as a standalone story. Knowing the universe will obviously make certain details richer, but the first Edgerunners proved that the formula works best when character comes before encyclopedia knowledge. That accessibility could make the October 20 premiere a major crossover moment again. The original anime famously sent players back to Cyberpunk 2077 in huge numbers. Now the relationship works in both directions: the game has expanded, Night City is far more established in pop culture, and Edgerunners itself has become a recognizable anime brand. The audience waiting for this series is much larger than the one that existed before David Martinez walked into class. We Are Ready to Get Hurt Again Everything revealed so far suggests that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 understands why the first anime worked without being afraid to leave its characters behind. That is exactly what this sequel needed. Weak gives us a cyberpunk who already knows what it feels like to become somebody and then lose it. D brings revenge, nomad history, and netrunning into the center of the story. Roman introduces a fascinating obsession with documenting truth in a city built on manufactured experience. Talia and Avida connect family drama to Maelstrom, Kang Tao, and Weak’s past. And Studio TRIGGER once again gets to turn Night City into the loudest, ugliest, most beautiful machine imaginable. The first Edgerunners asked how far someone would go for the dreams of the people they loved. The second looks ready to ask what remains after the dream becomes a story. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres October 20, 2026, exclusively on Netflix. Night City survived David Martinez. Now it has a new crew to chew through.
